Establishing substance identity for REACH

The identity of a substance is demonstrated through the process of analytical characterisation. Under REACH, there are four scenarios where this activity is warranted:

  1. Submission of an Inquiry
  2. Making a REACH registration
  3. Submission of a PPORD (Product and Process Orientated Research and Development) Notification
  4. Application for Authorisation

Every manufacturer or importer intending to undertake any of the above activities must characterise their substances fully. The ECHA has stated an intention to evaluate at least 5% of all dossiers submitted, with substance identity being one of the criteria assessed.

How we can help

The REACH Centre is one of the UK's leading providers of substance characterisation services, having supported a wide range of industries with their 2010 registration activities. Our chemists have over 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals sector dealing with an extensive array of substances, and have particular expertise in the characterisation of UVCBs (e.g. petrochemicals, essential oils). We are able to drive the entire characterisation process on behalf of the client, providing:

  • Design of an appropriate analytical strategy
  • Management of analytical activities
  • Interpretation of the raw data
  • Construction of the final reports, suitable for direct entry into a registration dossier or enquiry

We provide comprehensive support and services for all REACH characterisation obligations.
